Letter from the President
Just yesterday you received a letter from me. In that letter I explained that RBFC had not changed its suspension of activities. As we noted, this is a dynamic situation and things are changing daily.
After I sent my letter, President Trump updated the social distancing guidelines by recommending social distancing and self-imposed isolation through April 30. In response, Kevin Payne, the CEO/Executive Director of US Club Soccer, issued an update.
In it he stated,
"As you know we took the unusual step of suspending all soccer activities under our jurisdiction, originally through Easter. In consideration of the latest guidance from the federal government, we are extending that suspension through April 30. We believe this is a very important time in our battle to contain the spread of the coronavirus, and are convinced that a more rigorous approach now will make a big difference."
In light of this new information, the RBFC Board convened an emergency meeting. The Board voted to follow the guidance of US Club Soccer and suspend RBFC’s soccer activities through April 30. We hope to return to playing soccer soon, but the health and safety of our players and their families is our number one priority. The Board will continue to take reasonable and measured counsel from local, state, and national organizations based on facts.
The Board understands that the lack of certainty gives rise to frustration and fear. During the Civil War, General Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson was discussing strategy with his officers. One commander began his recommendation declaring, “I fear we will not find our wagons tonight.” General Jackson responded, “Never take counsel from your fears.” (Mary Anna Jackson, Memoirs of “Stonewall” Jackson, 1895, 264).
In other words, we cannot let fear and uncertainty determine our course. Throughout our history, as a nation, there have been dark moments full of fear; moments when there seemed we could not get back into the game, let alone even the score. Yet, time and again, we rallied and we are stronger for each moment. We will come through this stronger again, as players, teams, families, a club, and a country. And we will do it together.
